The Story Behind Silent Night: A peaceful walk with our Lord through this life is all many of us desire. I think many of us get caught up in insuring that peace ourselves at all costs. We struggle to attain financial and physical security, to put comfort over the creator, to exhaust ourselves in the pursuit of a peaceful and comfortable life. We lose sight somewhere along this road that our Lord himself is peace. He alone is the root and the cause of peace, comfort and security. We can do many responsible and helpful things in this pursuit but when your head hits the pillow it’s Christ alone that can still your anxious mind. Let us reflect on the beautiful hymn sweetly and peaceably welcoming the birth of our Lord. Let us be taken back to tree farms and decorating with those we love. The balsam, spruce beckon us back to the still forests at creation. They beckon us back to the stillness of a manger. They beckon us back to a family gathered under the tree. Most of all let it beckon us to the peace we find in knowing our future is safe within the arms of Christ.
