The Story Behind It Is Well: “Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul” With this hymns’ comforting power across centuries, few know the heart wrenching story of its composition. Lawyer and young Christian businessman Horatio Spafford lost much of his fortune in the great Chicago fire and in the autumn of 1873 he had planned a trip to Europe for his wife and four daughters to relax away from the stresses of America. At the last minute Horatio was forced to stay behind but sent his family on ahead of him seeking not to ruin their vacation. On November 22nd the ship was struck and sunk over the Atlantic leaving his wife as the only survivor. As Horatio sailed to retrieve his daughters he penned the lyrics of “It is Well” as his ship crossed the spot where they perished. As you light this candle we ask that you play this hymn, allow the sandalwood, caramel and cream to calm your mind and think to some of the darkest moments in your walk with our Lord. Take this time to battle through what hurts your soul and dwell in the goodness of our risen Lord. Let us be reminded that in all things, with Christ as our savior and salvation our inheritance it truly is well with our souls. May the grace of God comfort you in the most trying of times.
“Whether it is good or bad, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we are sending you, that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God." -Jeremiah 42:6 (ESV)
